چکیده

SiC-SiC composites offer excellent potential for fusion energy as well as numerous commercial applications. High manufacturing cost and very low through-the-thickness (transverse) thermal conductivity (below 15 W/mK) hinders wider applications of SiC/SiC composites. To overcome these obstacles, a low-cost, Chemical Vapor Reaction (CVR) process was developed to fabricate crystalline, high purity SiC fibers. Several variations of the CVR process were used to fabricate SiC/SiC composites. An unirradiated, 4 mm thick SiC/SiC composite was completely CVRconverted from a converted SiC fiber preform with a pitch graphite matrix, and exhibited a bulk density of 2.65 g/cc, 10% open porosity, RT and 1000C thermal conductivity values of 70 and 35 W/mK, respectively, and a RT bend strength of 200 MPa.

The Effective Thermal Transport in Composite Materials

Composite materials are promising materials, which should exhibit an improve on several aspects of the physical properties such as mechanical, thermal, electrical etc.. A composite material is a system of materials composed of two or more components randomly mixed and bonded on a macroscopic scale. For example, metal-alloys Silicon carbides such as Aluminum Silicon Carbide (AlSiC) is made up of...

Analytical electron microscopy of W-core β-SiC fibers for use in an SiC-based composite material for fusion applications.

In this work, the interactions between tungsten (W) and silicon carbide (SiC) in Sigma SiC fibers at high temperatures were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. These fibers could have the potential for use in fusion-related applications owing to their high thermal conductivity compared with pure SiC-based fibers. The as-received fibers were composed of a 100-μm-th...

Self‐Tuning n‐Type Bi2(Te,Se)3/SiC Thermoelectric Nanocomposites to Realize High Performances up to 300 °C

Bi2Te3 thermoelectric materials are utilized for refrigeration for decades, while their application of energy harvesting requires stable thermoelectric and mechanical performances at elevated temperatures. This work reveals that a steady zT of ≈0.85 at 200 to 300 °C can be achieved by doping small amounts of copper iodide (CuI) in Bi2Te2.2Se0.8-silicon carbide (SiC) composites, where SiC nanodi...
